I understand that the SQL Server 2005 SP2 failed to be installed on your
Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition running SQL Server 2005 STD. The error
code is 0x80070643.
If I have misunderstood, please let me know.
The error code indicates that fatal error during the installation.
Unfortunately we could not get more information from this message.
Could you please mail me the installation logs ( C:\WINDOWS\Hotfix ) for
further research? My email address is changliw_at_microsoft_dot_com.
If the hotfix logs were not generated, I recommend that you use FileMon amd
RegMon to monitor the SP2 setup progress and mail me the logs for further
research.

Charles Wang

======================================================|||Charles, please help!
My problem is almost the same as Edward's. I have tried more than 5 times
to install the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service pack and
every time I get the message: Updates were unable to be successfully
installed.
I have no error code: none comes up. I also have no hotfix file in the
Windows directory. What is filemon? How do I access it to give you more
info?
My computer has also been running slower since I installed Office 2007, but
I know that's another issue. It freezes if it has been on for awhile, and
programs are slow to open and close. I maintain my computer, I have all the
necessary virus, firewall, spyware, whatever -- so what could be the problem?
My computer is a Dell, about 8 months old, running with XP Media edition.
Thanks for your help. I am getting desperate.
Thanks,
Marla

any Idea?

It means that you take the wrong package to apply. You will need to get the following packages for ENU depending on the processor archiectures.

SQLServer2005SP1-KB913090-x86-ENU.exe

SQLServer2005SP1-KB913090-x64-ENU.exe

SQLServer2005SP1-KB913090-ia64-ENU.exe

Having trouble installing SQl Server 2005

I am having trouble installing SQL Server 2005 on a new machine at a hosted company. I am only installing the minimum, SQL Databaes Services. It errors out at the end and says see log. I have installed SQl 2005 10 times with no problem at other locations. The service won't even start it says error 3 path unkown. If I look for the path it shows in the service it hasn't been created, the files and directories were not created at that directory location. I tried to install bot as a Domain Admin and Local Admin accounts.

Having Trouble Installing Reporting Services

i am having some trouble installing SQl server Reporting Services.
well, in order to install the reporting services i have to install
Service
Pack 3a.
so through my installation of package 3a i am encoutering some trouble.
i was able to comlete the first part of the installation i receive

this error message: Instance name specified is invalid

so, my question is: once you have SQL Server installed, where can you
go to find the name of the instance
and once i find it, can i rename it?
i originally installed SQL Server a while ago. during the setup, i do
not recall a particular name i might have given it.<ajackson@.icstars.org> wrote in message

See questions 12, 13 and 28. You can't rename an instance - you have to
install another one with the correct name, move your databases to it, and
then remove the original one.

HAVING PROBLEMS INSTALLING THE SQL 2005 EXPRESS

hello, I am having some problems installing the sql 2005 express that comes with the asp.net 2.0

It says that the installation failed thats all. Anyone with that kind of problem?

Installation failure is not so easy to troubleshoot... If you had installed beta version of VS2005, you'd better uninstall the existing components completely. Here is a uninstall tool for VS2005:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/support/uninstall/default.aspx

If you want to troubleshoot the installation, you can take a look at these posts:

Having Problems Installing SQL Server 2005 Express

I am running WinXP Home edition, and I was trying to install SQL Server Express, but the error message is too vague for me fix. It says my computer lacks the "Service Pack Requirements" to run the software, but I'm afraid I don't know which service pack requirements the error is talking about. What Service Pack do I need to download?

Here is the report from the install:

I am running WinXP Home edition, and I was trying to install SQL Server Express, but the error message is too vague for me fix. It says my computer lacks the "Service Pack Requirements" to run the software, but I'm afraid I don't know which service pack requirements the error is talking about. What Service Pack do I need to download?

Having 2 CALCULATE statements no longer works after installing SP2!!!

I received the following email from a collegue of mine:

I think we may have found an issue with SQL SERVER 2005 SP2

1. Some of the Analysis Services Properties when you click the advanced tab are missing!

2. The MDX scrip behaviour is not the same.

In our cubes we had two CALCULATE statements - first to aggregate the data as normal, then some code to calculate MTD and YTD figures and then another CALCULATE statement. This enabled us to calculate percentages later on in the script without having to sum up all the data at leaf levels first.

With SP2, this no longer works!!! All our percentages are now being added up (like all other measures) which is clearly wrong!

I am not sure how to deal with this. Do we need to inform the clients not to upgrade to SP2 OR can Microsoft resolve this?

Any ideas?

Actually, two CALCULATE statements are the same as one CALCULATE statement w.r.t. aggregating data. The only difference could be if you have unary operators/custom rollups etc. So I suspect the use of two CALCULATE in your scenario was redundant. There is probably something else going on. If you will paste your MDX Script here, perhaps somebody will be able to figure it out.|||Thanks for the reply Mosha. I will get my collegue to post an example.|||

Hello Mosha,

Attached is the MDX Script.

All it does is - FIRST calculates MTD and YTD values

Then calcualtes some percentages.

Prior to Service Pack 2, these percentage calculations displayed correct number when MTD was selected on the FLOW dimension.

Post Service Pack 2, its seems that the percentages are getting calculated first and then the MTD logic is being applied resulting in the addition of all percentages from the lowest level which is not the desired behaviour.

I have tried removing the second calculate statement and it still does not work in sp2.

thanks for your help.

Hardware considerations for Report Server?

Hi all,
we use SSRS based on SSAS Cubes.
We thought about installing SSAS on one server, the relational data on an
other SQL Server and put the Report Server with the IIS 6.0 on a third
machine.
As we haven't any experiences with load and performance for BI-Applications
I'm wondering how many memory we should buy for each server.
The idea of our system service is the following:
32 GB for the analysis server
16 GB for the relational database server
4 GB for the web and reporting server
I have the impression that the 4 GB for the web/reporting server is too few,
but memory for the two others sounds pretty good.
What do you say?
Thanks a lot for any answers...
Cheers
MarcYou didn't talk about the expected load on the server and the number of
CPU's. My experience is that 4 GB is fine but I would want multiple CPUs. If
you design the way you should (i.e. limit the data at the source and limit
the report to what the user needs to see) then that configuration will be
pretty darn good. I would look at 4 CPU (but again, it depends on your
load).
Without knowing the load (expected number of reports per hour for instance),
it is really hard to say.

Hardware - Multiple Instances of SQL in a cluster

Can anyone advise as to the best practices for installing mulitple instances
of SQL into a cluster? Specifically as to the harddrive quantity and
configuration.
I already have 1 instance in a cluster and need to add more to it. So, my
cluster already has a drive for OS (Mirrored), a drive for MSDTC (Mirrored),
a drive for the quorum (Mirrored) and a drive for the database and
transaction logs (Raid5) (these are not high usage, so 1 drive for db and
logs should be more than sufficient).
I obviously need to add more hard drives to the cluster, but how many per
instance? I assume that I don't need more drives for MSDTC? Howabout the
quorum - is that one per instance? or is it just the databses ?
Thanks
Setesh
You should think of each virtual server as a separate real server. Decide
the disk layout as you would any stand-alone server. It takes at least one
physical disk to 'anchor' the virtual server.
You only need one Quorum disk and one MSDTC instance per cluster.

Here is some good information on SQL Clustering and Instances. In short you
will need additional disks only for SQL. The cluster quorum is a single
resource that is created when you install the cluster. You also have to plan
for each node to be able to scale to acceptable performance if a node has to
run more than one instance if their is a failure.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ar_cs_9i5u.asp
Also if your installing a Named instance of SQL 2000 on a Windows 2003
cluster you will need to follow this article, setup will fail everytime until
you do. I had to learn this the hard way , my loss is your gain...good
luck!

Hard Drive trashing After SP2 + KB934458

Hi. Has anyone else had any problem with their SQL Server 2005 going nuts after installing the SP2 + the above hotfix?

We reboot the SQL Server and as soon as SQL receives a command of any sort, the SCSI RAID 5 hard drives light up and start trashing. Therefore every query and even Windows response time is painfully slow or fails to respond. When we look at the Activity Monitor and sp_who2 there is a process running a Select Into from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio using the sa account from the last database name in our system. So we can't kill the process as it says "Cannot use KILL to kill your own process. Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 6104)".

The last Transact-SQL command from this process is:
create table #tmpDBCCinputbuffer ((Event Type) nvarchar(512),
[Parameters] int, [Event Info] nvarchar(512))
insert into #tmpDBCCinputbuffer exec ('DBCC INPUTBUFFER(56)')
select [Event Info] from #tmpDBCCinputbuffer

The only other issue I should mention is that we had to uninstall and reinstall SQL Server yesterday as SP2 only half installed. The SP2 install log indicated that SQL SP1 wasn't in a good state as we previously (3 months ago) performed an upgrade from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 R2 Server.

Our other 3 Windows 2003 R2 Servers which were a clean install of both Windows and SQL are running fine.

I've been insisting that we do a new clean Windows and SQL install, but the other team members insist that it's been fine until we installed SQL Server SP2.

So can anyone provide and help or evidence to say who is right either way?

Thanks.

It could be a hardware or a controller issue. Please check the system event log or get the hardware guys to confirm that all is fine wiht hardware.

By the way processes that are running are they clocking a lot of IO under SP_WHO2?

Jag

|||It is the same hardware and we've checked the system event log.

The process is Push Merge Replication and there was basically no hard drive I/O. Especially shown in PerfMon.exe

We've fixed the problem now by moving to a Dynamic Pull Merge Subscription Replication model. We've thrown more Drives at the RAID array and reindex the system table MSMerge_Contents and a few other high use tables often and it seems to production ready now.
