Having Problems Installing SQL Server 2005 Express

I am running WinXP Home edition, and I was trying to install SQL Server Express, but the error message is too vague for me fix. It says my computer lacks the "Service Pack Requirements" to run the software, but I'm afraid I don't know which service pack requirements the error is talking about. What Service Pack do I need to download?

Here is the report from the install:

Has anyone seen a Licensing screen during the install process?

Hi again.

I have been deploying the first few test SQL 2005 machines recently, from what I was told is the full-feature edition DVD received from the https://licensing.microsoft.com website.

We have purchased a mixture of per-processor and per-user licenses to use for this software. However, I am never asked what licensing mode to use during the install.

Can anyone confirm or deny that a setup screen appears asking what licensing version you want to use (per-user or per-processor)?

I cannot confirm what was downloaded from the licensing-website because I don't have access through the company.

I have the same symptoms as seen on this postings:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=360181&SiteID=1

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=510279&SiteID=1

However, I don't see such a Control Panel utility to change the licensing type.

Thanks to anyone who can assist.

The Licensing is not controlled through installation or configuration in SQL Server 2005. It is simply a mater of ensuring that you purchase the correct license for the configuration that you are running.

Thanks

Michelle

Just to make sure I understand this: in our case, we've purchased a SQL Server 2005 license from an OEM. We've installed the Enterprise Eval version of SQL Server 2005, supposedly good for 180 days. How does it go from an Eval version to a "purchased" version?

RDTuengel

|||

It won't. Although Michelle is saying above the licensing is based on the honor system, most evaluation editions cut-out after the designated number of days.

You will need to get your hands on an over-the-counter version of the software.

I'm surprised you were able to purchase a license without receiving the original software. You may want to call the OEM or Microsoft.

I'm not sure if you can "upgrade" an evaluation edition to an over-the-counter version... you may want to investigate.

Good luck.

hardware sizing

Hi,
We are running SQL Server 7.0 Standard Edition and
planning to upgrade to SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition
in a new hardware. Present hardware is having 2.4GB RAM
with 4 processor of 199MHZ . We are planning buy new
hardware with 3GB with 4 Processor of 1.4GHZ. According
to SQL Server documentation if its more than 2GB we have
to get Enterprise edition.
Here is my question:
Can we just allocate 2GB for SQL Server and just use
Standare edition and leave the extra 1GB for other
applications?
Your answers will be greately appriciated.
Thanks,
Mani.Yes, that will work just fine. Actually, SQL will top out at around 1.7GB
with standard edition, leaving 1.3 for OS and other application components,
should you have them

Hardware requirements

We're running an SQL 2000 server (Standard Edition) that is running
particularly slowly on it's existing "low end" hardware.
We have want to purchase a faster machine for it and have had two
near-identical quotes for:
A - Twin XEON 3.8 GHz processors
B - Twin XEON dual core 2.8 GHz processors (so effectively a quad processor)
What hardware would benefit SQLServer 2000 most?
Thanks for any advice
GriffAdditional information
This SQL Server services a single application (single user), rather than a
multi-connection scenairo. Some of the queries take literally hours to run
on the old hardware.
Griff|||> This SQL Server services a single application (single user), rather than a

Multiple cores are most useful for multiple concurrent queries and parallel
plans, including index rebuilds. If you are focusing on improving
performance of a single concurrent query that doesn't involve parallelism,
faster CPUs are more beneficial than more cores.

> Some of the queries take literally hours to run on the old hardware.
Be sure you know where your bottleneck is before you throw hardware at the
problem. It is often the case that much improvement can be made from schema
and application tuning. Once the app is well tuned, you can identify the
hardware bottleneck and address accordingly. Faster processors might not
help much if you have a disk bottleneck.
Hope this helps.

Might try by installing FeaturePack and then retry installing SQL 2005 dev.|||Shows "The System administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"
What is policy to block this installation?

Thanks

Hey,

I had the same issues installing MSXML6.0 with my SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as part of CRM Dynamics 3.0. Despite there being no policy (local or global) in place to enforce such a thing, I kept getting a failed installation of SQL Express due to an issue with MSXML6.0. Whenever I tried to install MSXML6.0 stand-alone, all I would receive is this blasted error message:

"The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"

I tried several things over several hours including the following:

- registered then unregistered Windows installer package

- uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Installer package

- logging on as local admin to install

- creating a policy and enforcing the use of Windows Installer, as well as elevating the install rights of everyone.

- getting desperate I removed and reinstalled the .NET framework 1.1, 2 and 3 (this was the last thing I changed before having the issues)

- basically tried every recommendation I found through Google on every forum...TO NO AVAIL.

I used the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301) to remove the install configuration for MSXML6.0.

After that being done, everything works fine now and no words can express my relief...

I hope this helps someone else.

Thanks Krobson... it worked for me...

The cleaner isn't to be used with Office 2007 according to the KB. Anyone find a work around with Office 2007?

|||

ACTUALLY -- This did the trick after all -- I misunderstood the original article. It's saying not to cleanup any office related installation information. MSXML does not fall under that catagory.
